Rotarian of the Month
                        Matt Whitman
Matt Whitman joined the Cortland Rotary Club in the spring of 2016. He immediately made an impact on both the Club and the District. In the spring of 2016 the District held its first informational meeting about Opioid Addiction in our seven county area. Matt was there as an expert representing the Cortland Area Communities that Care. The coalition has been developing strategies to create a health community for the children of Cortland County for many years. Cortland Rotary with the guidance of JoAnn Wickman and Matt Whitman have helped steer the District wide effort to attain a Rotary International Grant to Fight Opioid Addiction in our area.
Early in the discussion was an effort to find goals that could be accomplished. The opioid addiction problem is very complex, so focusing on attainable goals was very important when asking for funding. The grant is moving ahead very well. Students have been selected to attend training to promote the discussion about educating our school age students about opioid addiction. Drug drop boxes are being located throughout the District. People needing counseling are getting help through the Broome County Addiction Center. Matt has continued to be a leader in guiding the group of Rotarians at the heart of this very important effort.
In the short time that Matt has been a Rotarian he has also made an impact on the Cortland Club. This year he is co-chairing the Program Committee. His Rotarian colleagues have selected him as a director on its Board. He has taken a number of months as the Club’s greeter, making folks feel welcome at our Club’s meetings.
Matt is a 2010 graduate from Binghamton University. He has worked for AmeriCorps in Broome County planning and facilitating wellness programs for seniors. In that role he designed and implemented wellness programs. He then moved to a position at SUNY Cortland Institute for Civil Engagement as the community outreach coordinator. A year later he was selected as the Project Manager for the Cortland Area Communities that Care. In that role he manages the day to day operations of a community coalition of over twenty members. He also has implemented a county-wide branding campaign and marketing strategy to support of a comprehensive fund raising campaign. Seeking and managing funding is also a critical part of his duties, as well as coordinating a staff and communicating with a Board.
The Cortland Rotary Club is proud to nominate Matt Whitman as the District 7170 Rotarian of the Month.
